What Causes This?

Windows error 0x80072EE7 usually means your PC cannot resolve the server name it needs to reach. In plain terms, Windows Update, the Microsoft Store, or another service tries to connect online, but a DNS problem, bad proxy setting, corrupted network cache, or incorrect hosts file entry blocks the request. It can also happen after malware cleanup, VPN use, or network changes that leave old settings behind.

Common Symptoms

  • Windows Update fails and shows error 0x80072EE7
  • Microsoft Store apps will not download or update
  • You can browse some websites, but Microsoft services do not connect
  • Update checks hang for a long time, then fail
  • Network-related troubleshooters report DNS or connection issues

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check that your internet connection is working

    • Open your browser and visit a few sites like https://www.microsoft.com and https://www.bing.com.
    • If nothing loads, restart your router and reconnect your PC to Wi-Fi or Ethernet before trying anything else.
    • If only Microsoft sites fail, continue with the steps below.
  2. Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Find Network and Internet and click Run.
    • Apply any fixes Windows suggests, then restart your PC.
  3. Reset DNS and network settings

    • Click Start, type cmd.
    • Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
    • Run these commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each:
      ipconfig /flushdns
      ipconfig /release
      ipconfig /renew
      netsh winsock reset
      netsh int ip reset
    • Restart your computer after the commands finish.
  4. Check for a bad proxy setting

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Network & internet > Proxy.
    • Make sure Use a proxy server is turned Off, unless your workplace or school specifically requires it.
    • If Automatically detect settings is available, leave it On.
  5. Clear the Windows Update cache

    • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • In the Services window, find Windows Update.
    • Right-click it and choose Stop.
    • Open File Explorer and go to: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
    • Delete the contents of that folder.
    • Go back to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
    • Try Windows Update again.
  6. Check your hosts file for blocked Microsoft addresses

    • Open Notepad as administrator: click Start, type Notepad, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
    • In Notepad, open: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
    • Change the file type from Text Documents to All Files if needed.
    • Look for any lines mentioning Microsoft, Windows Update, or unusual web addresses. If you see entries that should not be there, remove them, save the file, and restart your PC.
  7. Try a public DNS server

    • Open Settings > Network & internet.
    • Select your active connection, then open Hardware properties or DNS server assignment.
    • Change DNS to manual and enter:
      • Preferred DNS: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate DNS: 8.8.4.4
    • Save the changes and test Windows Update again.
