How to Fix It Manually

  1. Restart your PC and try the update again

  2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

    • Open Settings with Windows + I.
    • In Windows 11, go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • In Windows 10, go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
    • Find Windows Update and click Run.
    • Apply any fixes it suggests, then restart your PC.
  3. Clear the Windows Update cache

    • Press Windows + S, type cmd, then choose Run as administrator for Command Prompt.
    • Run these commands one at a time:
      net stop wuauserv
      net stop bits
      net stop cryptsvc
      net stop msiserver
    • Open File Explorer and go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
    • Delete the contents of the Download folder.
    • Then go to C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 and delete its contents if Windows allows it.
    • Go back to Command Prompt and restart the services:
      net start wuauserv
      net start bits
      net start cryptsvc
      net start msiserver
  4. Repair corrupted system files

    • Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
    • Run this command and wait for it to finish:
      sfc /scannow
    • After that, run:
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Restart your PC when both scans are done.
  5. Check your drive for file system errors

    • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
    • Run:
      chkdsk C: /f
    • If prompted to schedule the scan on restart, type Y and press Enter.
    • Restart your PC and let the disk check complete.
  6. Install the update manually

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the KB number of the failed update.
    • Visit the Microsoft Update Catalog in your browser.
    • Search for that KB number, download the version that matches your system, and install it manually.
    • Restart your PC after installation.
