A full C drive usually happens when temporary files, Windows update leftovers, app caches, downloads, and old system files build up over time. Large apps, games, restore points, and files saved to the Desktop or Downloads folder can also fill the drive faster than expected. On smaller SSDs, even normal Windows use can leave very little free space.
Common Symptoms
- Windows warns that you are low on disk space
- Your PC becomes slow, freezes, or takes longer to start
- Windows updates fail or cannot install
- Apps will not open, install, or save files properly
- You cannot download new files or move files to the C drive
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check what is using space
- Press Windows + I to open Settings
- Go to System > Storage
- Wait for Windows to calculate usage, then review categories like Apps, Temporary files, Documents, and Other
- Open the largest categories to see where space is being used
-
Delete temporary files
- In Settings > System > Storage, click Temporary files
- Check items such as Temporary files, Delivery Optimization Files, Recycle Bin, and Thumbnails
- Be careful with Downloads — only select it if you are sure you do not need those files
- Click Remove files
-
Run Disk Cleanup for system files
- Press Windows, type Disk Cleanup, and open it
- Select the C: drive and click OK
- Click Clean up system files
- Select C: again if prompted
- Check items like Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary Windows installation files, System error memory dump files, and Temporary files
- Click OK > Delete Files
-
Uninstall large apps and games
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps
- Sort by Size
- Remove apps, games, or tools you no longer use by clicking the three dots > Uninstall
- If you use Steam, Xbox, or other launchers, check their game libraries too
-
Move or delete personal files
- Open File Explorer with Windows + E
- Check Downloads, Desktop, Videos, and Documents for large files
- Move large files to another drive or external storage
- Empty the Recycle Bin after deleting files
-
Reduce System Restore space
- Press Windows, type Create a restore point, and open it
- Under Protection Settings, select C: and click Configure
- Lower the Max Usage slider or click Delete to remove old restore points
- Keep System Restore enabled if possible, but reduce how much space it can use
-
Turn on Storage Sense
- Go to Settings > System > Storage
- Turn on Storage Sense
- Click it to configure automatic cleanup of temporary files, Recycle Bin items, and old Downloads files
- This helps stop the C drive from filling up again
