Windows installs language packs, speech files, handwriting data, and regional features when you add display languages, switch keyboards, or use a PC that came preconfigured for multiple regions. Over time, old or unused language components can stay behind even after you stop using them. These files are not usually harmful, but they can take up several hundred megabytes or more, especially on laptops or smaller SSDs.
Common Symptoms
- Storage settings shows Windows using more disk space than expected
- You see multiple languages listed in Windows settings that you no longer use
- Optional language features like speech or handwriting are installed unnecessarily
- Low disk space warnings appear on smaller drives
- Cleanup tools report removable optional Windows components
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check which languages are installed
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- In Windows 11, go to Time & language > Language & region.
- In Windows 10, go to Time & Language > Language.
- Review the list under Preferred languages and identify any languages you no longer need.
-
Remove unused display languages
- Click the language you want to remove.
- Select Remove.
- If the Remove button is grayed out, that language may be your current Windows display language.
- First switch your display language to one you want to keep, sign out and back in, then return and remove the old one.
-
Remove optional language features
- In Settings, open Apps > Optional features.
- Use the search box to look for items related to unused languages, such as:
- Language pack
- Speech
- Handwriting
- Text-to-speech
- Click each unused feature and select Uninstall.
-
Check keyboard layouts and regional extras
- Go back to Time & language > Language & region.
- Select a remaining language and open Language options.
- Under Keyboards, remove layouts you do not use.
- Under optional features, uninstall anything unnecessary for that language.
-
Clean up leftover temporary and update files
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Click Temporary files.
- Review the list and check safe items you want to remove, such as temporary files or delivery optimization files.
- Click Remove files.
- This will not always remove language packs directly, but it can clear related leftover files.
-
Use Disk Cleanup for additional system cleanup
- Press Windows + S, type Disk Cleanup, and open it.
- Select your C: drive and click OK.
- Click Clean up system files.
- Review the categories and remove unnecessary Windows cleanup items if available.
- Click OK, then Delete Files.
-
Restart your PC and verify storage
- Restart Windows after removing languages and optional features.
- Then go to Settings > System > Storage and confirm that disk usage has dropped.
- If removed languages still appear, run Windows Update once and check again, since Windows sometimes finalizes component removal after a restart.
