Windows builds up junk files over time from normal use. Temporary files, old Windows Update data, browser caches, installer leftovers, Recycle Bin contents, and app logs can all pile up in the background. If you install and remove programs often, download large files, or rarely clean your drive, this clutter can take up several gigabytes and slow down basic tasks.
Common Symptoms
- Your C: drive keeps running low on free space
- Windows feels slower when opening apps or saving files
- You see storage warnings in Settings or File Explorer
- Updates fail because there is not enough disk space
- Large amounts of space are marked as “Temporary files”
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check what is using space
- Press Windows + I to open Settings
- Go to System > Storage
- Wait for Windows to calculate usage, then review categories like Temporary files, Apps, and Documents
- This helps you confirm that junk files are part of the problem before deleting anything
-
Remove temporary files from Storage settings
- In Settings > System > Storage, click Temporary files
- Let Windows scan the drive
- Check items you want to remove, such as:
- Temporary files
- Thumbnails
- DirectX Shader Cache
- Delivery Optimization Files
- Recycle Bin
- Be careful with Downloads — only select it if you are sure you do not need those files
- Click Remove files
-
Run Disk Cleanup for deeper cleanup options
- Press Windows + S, type Disk Cleanup, and open it
- Select your C: drive and click OK
- Review the file types listed and check the ones you want to delete
- Click Clean up system files
- Select C: again, then look for larger cleanup items like:
- Windows Update Cleanup
- Temporary Windows installation files
- System error memory dump files
- Click OK > Delete Files
-
Empty the Recycle Bin
- Right-click Recycle Bin on your desktop
- Select Empty Recycle Bin
- Confirm the deletion
- Files in the Recycle Bin still use storage until you remove them permanently
-
Clear browser cache
- Open your browser
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete
- Choose a time range such as All time
- Select Cached images and files
- Click Clear data
- If you use more than one browser, repeat this in each one
-
Turn on Storage Sense to prevent buildup
- Go to Settings > System > Storage
- Turn Storage Sense On
- Click Storage Sense to configure it
- Set Windows to automatically clean temporary files and empty the Recycle Bin on a schedule
- This reduces future junk file buildup without manual cleanup every time
-
Restart your PC
- Click Start > Power > Restart
- Some temporary files are only fully cleared after a reboot
- After restarting, check Settings > System > Storage again to see how much space you recovered
