Microsoft Teams often crashes during meetings because of corrupted app cache, outdated Teams builds, or conflicts with graphics, audio, or webcam drivers. Meetings put more load on your PC than normal chat use, so hardware acceleration issues, background apps, and low system resources can trigger sudden crashes. In some cases, Windows updates or broken add-ins also make Teams unstable.
Common Symptoms
- Teams closes suddenly when you join or start a meeting
- Video freezes, then the app crashes or restarts
- Teams becomes unresponsive when screen sharing
- Audio or camera stops working right before a crash
- Crashes happen only on one PC, not on the web version
How to Fix It Manually
-
Fully close Teams and restart your PC
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Microsoft Teams under Processes, select it, and click End task.
- Restart your PC, then open Teams and test a meeting again.
- This clears stuck background processes that can cause repeat crashes.
-
Clear the Teams cache
- Close Teams completely first, including from the system tray near the clock.
- Press Windows+R, type:
then press Enter.%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams - Delete the contents of folders such as Cache, Code Cache, GPUCache, and tmp.
- Reopen Teams and sign in again if prompted.
- If you use the newer Teams app and this path does not help, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced options, then click Terminate and Reset.
-
Update Teams and Windows
- In Teams, click your profile picture in the top-right corner, then choose Check for updates.
- For Windows, open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
- Install all pending updates, then restart your PC.
- Crashes during meetings are often fixed by newer app or system patches.
-
Update your graphics, audio, and camera drivers
- Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics device, and select Update driver.
- Do the same for Audio inputs and outputs, Sound, video and game controllers, and Cameras.
- If Windows says the best driver is already installed, check your PC maker’s support site or GPU vendor site for a newer version.
- Driver problems are a common reason Teams crashes when using video or screen sharing.
-
Turn off hardware acceleration in Teams
- Open Teams and click your profile picture > Settings.
- In General, look for Disable GPU hardware acceleration or similar wording and turn it on.
- Close and reopen Teams.
- If Teams crashes before you can change this, use the web version temporarily at teams.microsoft.com.
-
Repair or reinstall Teams
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Teams, click the three dots, then choose Advanced options.
- Click Repair first. If that does not help, click Reset.
- If crashes continue, uninstall Teams from Installed apps, restart your PC, and install the latest version from Microsoft.
