Chrome memory leaks usually happen when a tab, extension, or background process keeps using RAM without releasing it properly. This can be caused by buggy extensions, too many open tabs, hardware acceleration issues, outdated Chrome builds, or corrupted browser data. On Windows, the problem is often worse if Chrome is allowed to keep running in the background after you close the browser.
Common Symptoms
- Chrome’s RAM usage keeps increasing the longer it stays open
- Windows feels slow or starts stuttering after browsing for a while
- Tabs crash, freeze, or show “Out of Memory” errors
- Task Manager shows multiple Chrome processes using large amounts of memory
- Fans spin up more often or the PC gets unusually warm during normal browsing
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check which Chrome tabs or extensions are using the most memory
- Open Chrome.
- Press Shift + Esc to open Chrome Task Manager.
- Click the Memory footprint column to sort by RAM usage.
- Look for tabs, extensions, or GPU processes using unusually high memory.
- Select the worst offender and click End process.
-
Disable or remove unnecessary extensions
- In Chrome, click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Go to Extensions > Manage Extensions.
- Turn off extensions you do not need, especially ad blockers, coupon tools, AI helpers, or tab managers you installed recently.
- If Chrome improves after disabling one, click Remove to uninstall it completely.
-
Stop Chrome from running in the background
- In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and click Settings.
- Click System on the left.
- Turn off Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed.
- Restart Chrome and check whether memory use stays lower over time.
-
Turn off hardware acceleration
- In Chrome Settings, go to System.
- Disable Use graphics acceleration when available.
- Click Relaunch.
- This can help if a GPU process or graphics driver issue is causing memory use to climb.
-
Update Chrome
- Click the three-dot menu > Help > About Google Chrome.
- Chrome will automatically check for updates.
- Install any available update, then click Relaunch.
- Memory leaks are sometimes fixed in newer Chrome versions.
-
Clear cached browser data
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete in Chrome.
- Set Time range to All time.
- Check Cached images and files. You can also check Cookies and other site data if websites are behaving oddly.
- Click Delete data.
- Corrupted cache or session data can sometimes cause tabs to keep consuming memory.
-
Check memory usage in Windows Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, find Google Chrome.
- Expand it to see child processes using RAM.
- If memory use keeps growing even with few tabs open, reboot the PC and test Chrome before launching other startup apps.
